NEW DELHI: A cluster scheme bus lost control and hit as many as 5 vehicles in southeast Delhi's New Friends Colony on Wednesday, leading to the death of an autorickshaw driver, while a scooter rider's leg had to be amputated.

Police managed to apprehend the driver of the bus involved in the terrifying accident.

According to reports, the bus was carrying passengers at the time of the incident, but they were able to save themselves somehow.

According to police accounts, they received a PCR call about the accident in New Friends Colony at 4:45 pm. A team from the local police station was dispatched and when they reached the spot, they found that a bus plying on route number 534 was involved in the incident. The cluster bus is said to ply between Mehrauli and Anand Vihar.

Rajesh Deo, the deputy commissioner of police (southeast) said that when the bus was supposed to take a left turn towards Sarai Jullena when it reached near the Masih Garh red light, but due to some alleged technical fault or negligence of the driver, it went forward and hit at least five vehicles. The vehicles hit included an autorickshaw, two cars and a scooter. The victims were immediately rushed to a hospital.

However, the autorickshaw driver, who has not been identified as yet, succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead.

Police sources informed that a doctor named Sajadul Islam was in one of the cars, and that he sustained injuries. The person riding the scooter, identified as Mohammad Shagird, who is said to be in the saree business, was critically injured. Unfortunately for him, his injuries were severe and his leg had to be amputated. Two more people involved in the accident sustained minor injuries.

After the incident, the driver of the offending vehicle identified as Neeraj Kumar, a resident of Nilothi Extension, fled the site of the accident. He was later apprehended by the police.

The reason behind the accident is being probed by the police, sources said. "We are probing whether it was a technical glitch or the negligence of the driver," an officer stated.

The passengers in the cluster scheme bus involved in the incident were coming from Nehru Place through Modi Mills. The bus was headed towards Maharani Bagh when the incident happened. A police officer said the scooter, found lying under the car, was completely damaged. The ill- fated autorickshaw was crushed and passersby removed it from the site.

CCTV cameras installed near the spot are being scanned by the cops to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the incident.
