New Delhi: It is said that love has no boundaries and nothing can come in the way of true love. It happened to be the case with a couple who had to recently go through some tough moments.
A Delhi High Court lawyer proposed to his Ukrainian girlfriend, who fled Kyiv, as soon as she landed in India.
33-year-old Anubhav Bhasin and 29-year-old Anna Horodetska have known each other for the last two and a half years and the couple initially met while travelling.
"The first time we actually got to know each other properly was just before the first lockdown in 2020," Anubhav told IANS.
The Indo-Ukrainian couple were travelling together when the first Covid lockdown was announced. Anna was working in an IT company and she got stuck due to the cancellation of flights.
So, Anna resided at Anubhav's house until she could return back to her country.
Anubhav said that they met again in Dubai after the stringent lockdown got lifted and added that she came to India and he visited Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The Delhi High Court lawyer further went on to say that she came to India in December last year and met his family after which the couple decided to tie the knot. Anna flew back to Ukraine after their marriage was finalized.
Anna woke up to the sounds of heavy bombardments on the first day of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on February 24. She had been hoping to find safe spots to take shelter from the shelling and had moved in and out of bomb shelters for the next three days.
Later, she decided to flee to neighbouring Poland along with her mother and her dog and the family fled their country on February 27.
Anubhav recalled that her mother took a train towards her hometown Kamianka to go to her grandma's place. He further added that Anna waited for two hours till she found a train going towards Lviv, a city which is located in Western Ukraine and which is close to the Polish border.
She decided to take a bus to Poland after staying in Lviv on the night of February 27. However, after realizing that people had been unable to get past the Polish border crossing despite waiting for more than 24 hours, she decided to take a bus going to the border with Slovakia. Anna eventually managed to cross the border on foot after waiting for a couple of hours.
Thereafter, she found a minibus which was heading to Kraków in Poland and she stayed there for a couple of weeks.
"I had some friends there who helped her and provided her accommodation," Anubhav said.
"Finally, she applied for a visa at the Indian embassy in Poland and when it was granted, she flew to India and I proposed to her at the airport," he added.
"We just need to go back to get the dog whenever the war gets over," he further added.
Anna will apply for Indian citizenship after she ties the knot with Anubhav and she currently has a one-year visa.
