Delhi Police Trains 19 Women Commandos as Sharpshooters for G-20 Summit

NEW DELHI: Keeping In view the upcoming G-20 summit to be held soon in Delhi, 19 women commandos of the Delhi Police were selected to receive specialised training as "markswomen" to be deployed as the frontline sharpshooters in the security dragnet during the key event, officials said on Tuesday.

The group of 19 is the first batch of women commandos to be imparted such highly specialised professional training in shooting by a trained Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) team, the officials said.

The markswomen will act as the frontline sharpshooter commandos of the force to be deployed for providing security cover.

HGS Dhaliwal, Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), said that keeping in view the upcoming G-20 summit, the Delhi Police is committed to provide the utmost security to the visiting delegates. Towards this end, the special cell has taken one step ahead by providing specialised weapons training to its female SWAT commandos so that they can be placed in the frontline.

The sharpshooters in the SWAT group would be able to identify potential threats to the dignitaries coming for the G-20 summit from different nations and neutralize any such threat from their positions at a distance from the event, so that there is no cause of panic. Of course, the Delhi Police expects not to have to face any such threat. In any event, they will now be ready.

The Delhi Police’s Special Cell tweeted, “First Batch of 19 Women (SWAT) Commandos of Delhi Police trained as “MARKSWOMEN” by a trained ITBP team. Will act as frontline accurate sharpshooter commandos of Delhi Police. Best “MARKSWOMEN” able to hit a target of 4cms from a distance of 100 yards.”

The first batch of Delhi Police’s 19 women SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) commandos have successfully undergone a four-week course in sharpshooting from the training team of the ITBP Force, RTC, conducted at Karera, Madhya Pradesh, during the months of June-July, he said.

At the end of this training course, the officer said , 19 women SWAT commandos of the Delhi Police have been trained in the basic principles of firing and they were groomed as markswomen.

Among the trainees, constable Kiran came in first position by securing 95 per cent marks, constable Vaishali secured second position with 77.5 pc marks, while constable Kavita came in third with 75 per cent marks, he further informed.

It was informed, with pride, that the best female SWAT commando will now able to hit a target the size of only 4 cm out from a distance of 100 yards, the officer added.
