Delhi Woman Killed With Iron Rod Was Earlier In Relationship With Killer Cousin: Police

NEW DELHI: Several new facts have emerged in the case relating to the shocking killing of a 23-year-old woman with an iron rod in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar area on Friday.

The victim, identified as Nargis, was allegedly killed after she was hit on the head with an iron rod by a man, now known to be her cousin Irfan, for turning down his marriage proposal, police said.

The victim and the accused Irfan, who was later arrested, were first cousins as their mothers are sisters, police officials added.

However, it is now known that Nargis and Irfan had been in a relationship earlier and talks about their marriage were held, but Nargis's family disapproved of the match.

It has also become apparent to the police that the accused had been stalking the victim for the last three to four days, looking for a chance to talk to her.

Nargis was attacked by 28-year-old Irfan when she met him in a park near Sri Aurobindo College of Delhi University, police officials said, adding the further information that the accused had been arrested.

The incident has also taken on political overtones, with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal slamming the state of law and order in the capital after the incident. Kejriwal also urged the Union home minister and the lieutenant governor to take strict measures.

"Another daughter was brutally murdered in Delhi, it is very sad. Law and order has become a serious issue in Delhi. It is a request to the LG and the Home Minister, make the police a little active. The safety of the daughters of Delhi and the people of Delhi is very important," he tweeted.

Police said they received information around noon that a man had attacked and hit a woman on the head at Vijay Mandal Park in Shivalik A Block of Malviya Nagar and fled the scene.

The victim's body was found under a bench by the police with an injury mark on the head, while an iron rod was found lying nearby, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Chandan Chowdhary said.

Police revealed that Nargis and Irfan were earlier in a relationship and they wanted to get married, but Nargis's family did not approve.

As a result, Nargis stopped talking to Irfan and this made him agitated, police said on the basis of Irfan’s confession.

Following her graduation this year, Nargis used to attend coaching classes in Malviya Nagar, they said.

It was revealed that the murder was planned by Irfan and he claimed to have taken the weapon from his house. Police are trying to verify his claims.

The Delhi Commission for Women has served a notice to the police, seeking details of the murder committed in broad daylight in a public park. The notice issued by DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal sought details on the FIR and action taken from the deputy commissioner of police (South) by July 31.
