Pune: The festival of lights, Diwali brings out joy. Many households associate it with the cleaning of the house. In a bizarre incident, a woman from Pune, Rekha Selukar threw away a bag of silver and gold jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh while cleaning her house.
Rekha was so engrossed in the process of cleaning that when the cleaning van came to take away the garbage, she sent her bag of jewellery along with them. However, it was only after two hours when Rekha realised that the bag was not to be thrown away at all costs as it carried jewellery worth Rs 3 lakhs.
The bag contained a mangalsutra, a pair of anklets, and other kinds of jewellery. Immediately after realising her mistake, Rekha contacted a local social worker named Sanjay Kute. He, in turn, alerted the PCMC health department team about the same.
The sanitary inspector of the civic body, Sushil Malayie, was informed about the mishap. He got Hemant Lakhan, the depot's data analyst to get to work and try and find the bag. He was able to locate the compactor which could possibly have the bag.
Despite it not being his actual work, Lakhan went out of his way and searched through 18-tonnes of muck to find the bag. After 40 minutes of searching through the garbage, the bag was found.
The Selukar family was called to the garbage dump where they were handed the bag by Lakhan. The family was relieved to get the bag back.
They were grateful to Lakhan for going out of his way to find it for them.
Lakhan was the Diwali gift for the Selukar family. Had it not been him, the family would not have celebrated the festival today!
