NEW DELHI: Indian External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, is set to embark on a significant four-day official visit to Tanzania, aiming to bolster diplomatic ties between the two nations. The visit, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, will witness high-level discussions, co-chairing of the 10th Joint Commission Meeting, and several key engagements alongside his Tanzanian counterpart, Stergomena Tax.
During the initial two days, Minister Jaishankar will travel to Zanzibar, where he plans to meet top officials and engage in various activities. Notably, he will visit a water supply project that was financed through a line of credit provided by the Indian government. Additionally, a reception will be hosted onboard the Indian Naval Ship Trishul, which is en route to Tanzania.
Subsequently, Minister Jaishankar will proceed to the city of Dar-es-Salaam, where he will co-chair the 10th India-Tanzania Joint Commission Meeting. This meeting holds great significance in strengthening bilateral cooperation and discussing matters of mutual interest. The Minister is also scheduled to call upon Tanzania's top leadership, including several Cabinet rank Ministers, to further enhance ties across various sectors.
"EAM will thereafter visit the Dar-es-Salaam city of Tanzania from 07-08 July 2023, where he will co-chair the 10th India-Tanzania Joint Commission Meeting with his counterpart and call on the country's top leadership, including several Cabinet rank Ministers," the official release said.
"During the visit, he will meet with the members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for India and inaugurate an India-Tanzania business meeting. EAM will also be addressing the Indian diaspora and inaugurating the bust of Swami Vivekananda in Dar es Salaam," the release added.
Furthermore, Minister Jaishankar will engage with the Parliamentary Friendship Group for India, emphasizing the importance of parliamentary diplomacy. Additionally, he will inaugurate an India-Tanzania business meeting, encouraging business collaboration and trade partnerships between the two countries. Addressing the Indian diaspora will be another key aspect of his visit, strengthening cultural bonds and acknowledging their contributions.
An honorable event during the visit will be the inauguration of the bust of Swami Vivekananda in Dar es Salaam, symbolizing the values of peace, harmony, and universal brotherhood. This gesture reflects India's commitment to fostering cultural exchanges and mutual understanding.
In a notable development, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is set to establish its overseas campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, scheduled to open in October 2023. This initiative aims to strengthen educational ties between the two nations. The IIT campus, named IIT Madras at Zanzibar, will welcome its first batch comprising 50 undergraduate students and 20 master's students. This expansion demonstrates India's commitment to promoting academic excellence and knowledge sharing beyond its borders. It will be the third overseas campus for IIT, alongside Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur.
India and Tanzania share a longstanding history of close, friendly, and cooperative relations. Recently, the second edition of the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting between the two nations was successfully held in Arusha. The discussions centered around enhancing security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), signifying the shared commitment to regional stability.
