NEW DELHI: Envoy of 16 countries will visit Kashmir for two days to assess the ground situation in the region. The delegation will have members from Latin American and African countries. According to various reports, US Ambassador to India Kenneth Ian Juster is expected to be part of the envoy. The European Union had informed the centre that they would visit the region later. They have also insisted on a meeting with prominent leaders Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, and Mehbooba Mufti who are under detention.

Last year a European Parliament delegation arrived in Kashmir for a day-long ‘unofficial’ visit. The visit was arranged by a European NGO and comprised members from the different EU Member States. It was the first foreign delegation visiting Kashmir after the scrapping of Article 370.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has often defended his move on scrapping Article 370. The special provision was the reason behind separatism and terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, he had said.
