Bhopal: A fire broke out at a government hospital in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on Monday night, killing four babies.
According to reports, the fire engulfed the Kamala Nehru Children's Hospital's newborn-care section.
"A fire broke out in the special newborn care unit (SNCU) ward, killing four children, most likely owing to a short circuit." We arrived at the scene with others shortly after learning of the tragedy. Inside the ward, it was pitch black. The babies were moved to a nearby unit, according to State Medical and Education Minister Vishwas Sarang.
At approximately 9 p.m., a fire broke out in the ward on the third floor of the hospital, which houses the ICU, and 8-10 fire engines were dispatched to the scene, according to Fatehgarh Fire Station in-charge Juber Khan.
As the rescue mission began, footage from the hospital showed stunned parents sobbing on the stairwell after exiting the ward. The rest of the babies were sent to various wards.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who expressed his condolences for the deceased, described the tragedy as "extremely unfortunate."
"Three children who were already gravely hurt in the fire event were unable to be saved, which is quite painful." Mr Chouhan had earlier tweeted, "The rescue operation was rapid and the blaze is currently under control, but tragically the lives of three youngsters could not be spared." Later, another fatality was recorded.
"The situation has been subjected to a high-level investigation." The investigation will be led by Mohammad Suleiman, assistant chief secretary (ACS) for health and medical education, according to another tweet from the Chief Minister.
He has promised a compensation of Rs. 4 lakh for the victims' families.
Former Chief Minister and Congress leader Kamal Nath described the occurrence as "extremely sad" and urged "a high-level investigation" and "severe punishment" against those guilty.
