Golden baba, known for wearing voluminous gold jewelry on his Kanwar Yatras is back for his Kanwar Yatra this year. Sudhir Makkar will be completing his 26th Kanwar Yatra this year but wearing lesser quantity of golden jewelry. The Golden baba is usually known for wearing at least 20 kg gold for his Kanwar Yatras, but this year the quantity is less. He is wearing 14 kg of gold ornaments this year for which he has cited his poor health as a reason.

However, even though the quantity of gold jewelry worn by Golden baba has decreased this year but that does not mean that he has stopped receiving attention from the police and public. The police is still concerned about proving him with the required protection, on the other hand, the common masses too are equally eager to steal a look of the heavy gold jewelries worn by him.

Speaking about his ailing state of health and the lesser gold jewelry worn by him this year, Makkar said, “Last year, I had announced that my silver jubilee journey will be my last Kanwar Yatra as my deteriorating health did not allow me to go on more Yatras. But with blessings from Lord Shiva, I was able to start my 26th Kanwar Yatra. With two throat surgeries, I had to reduce the number of gold chains that I could wear. The gold I am travelling with this year is about 14kgs.”

Makkar further added, “I remember in 1972 when gold was less expensive, I started wearing gold items and possessed nearly 40 grams gold then. And gradually the amount of gold increased.”

The gold chains, rings and necklaces worn by the baba while riding the expensive SUVs in his Kanwar Yattra have always been a point of attraction for the pilgrims joining the procession. The procession passing through Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi has been gaining the attention of the spectators since long and will continue as long as the Golden baba adorns it.
