Government will soon decide on the right age of marriage of the country's daughters, says Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that the government will decide soon on the right age for marriage of women. The decision would be taken as soon as the committee set up for the purpose submits the report.

During the event of the release of Rs. 75 denomination coin, PM Modi said that the discussion regarding the right age for marriage for the daughters of the nation is underway. Several girls have written to PM Modi asking why the concerned committee has not given any decision yet. To which, PM Modi assured the girls that as soon as the decision is made, the government will act on it.

The government has also taken various steps to maintain the health and hygiene of women. The ongoing work under the Jal Jeevan Mission will provide water to every household. The government is also providing sanitary pads at Rs. 1 each.

On September 22, the central government has said that a task force was constituted to study the correlation of the age of marriage and motherhood.

The Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani said, "a task force was constituted to examine the correlation of the age of marriage and motherhood with the i) health, medical well-being, and nutritional status of mother and neonate/infant/child, during pregnancy, birth, and thereafter, ii) key parameters like Infant Mortality Rate, Maternal Mortality Rate, Total Fertility Rate, Sex Ration at Birth, Child Sex Ratio, and iii) any other relevant point pertaining to health and nutrition in this context," in reply to Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Gupta in the last Parliament session. He asked whether the government was reconsidering the legal marriage age for women, which is currently 18-years.
