GSI Discovers 5.9 Million Tonnes Of Lithium Reserves In J&K

NEW DELHI: In a recent development, the government of India has announced recovery of 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves from Jammu and Kashmir. The GOI made this announcement on 9th of February, Thursday, and this is reportedly the first time such a massive amount of lithium reserve has been discovered in India. 

Lithium is considered as one of the most important components in EV batteries and is a non-ferrous metal. The ministry of mines issued a statement on Thursday informing that, for the first time ever, Geological Survey of India has identified Lithium inferred resources of 5.9 million tonnes from Jammu and Kashmir's Salal Haimana area which is located Reasi district.

Furthermore, the ministry mentioned that 51 mineral blocks which consist of gold and lithium has been transferred to respective state administrations. "Out of these 51 mineral blocks, 5 blocks pertain to gold and other blocks pertain to commodities like potash, molybdenum, base metals et cetera spread across 11 states of Jammu and Kashmir (UT), Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana," the ministry added.

Along with this, 7897 million tonnes of Coal and Lignite consisted in 17 reservers were presented to the ministry of coal. It is worth mentioning here that, the Geological Survey of India was introduced in the year 1851, in order to extract coal deposits for the Railways.

Over the course of time, GSI has evolved into a repository of geo-science information needed in several fields in India. Along with this, the GSI has also received the status of a geo-scientific organisation in an international stature. Recently, the GSI initiated an inspection process in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda region, to pull out the cause of cracks developed in more than 24 concrete establishments.
