Gandhinagar: In an unfortunate incident, as many as 28 people lost their lives while several others were admitted to hospitals after consuming spurious liquor in Gujarat's Botad district on Monday night.

As per Gujarat DGP Ashish Bhatia, a total of 28 people have died in Botad so far due to the consumption of poisonous liquor. In addition to this, about 30 people are still undergoing treatment.

''Some patients are in serious condition. The police have nabbed the accused into custody,'' Bhatia was quoted as saying by media reports.

As per reports, the victims had consumed methyl alcohol which people usually mixed directly in the water and consumed.

In this regard, at least three FIRs have been registered in Barwala, Ranpur, and Ahmedabad rural and there are also reports of forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Notably, around 600 liters of the chemical were sold for Rs 40,000 in the name of liquor and officials claimed that around 30 people are still undergoing treatment in various government hospitals in Bhavnagar, Botad, Barwala, and Dhanduka.

Inspector General of Police (IG) of Bhavnagar Range, Ashok Kumar Yadav said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under a Deputy Superintendent of Police-rank officer will be formed to probe the incident and nab bootleggers who sold the spurious liquor.

Besides this, Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Ahmedabad Crime Branch have also joined the investigation.
