India has been facing acute shortages of medical oxygen, hospital beds, and anti-viral drug Remdesivir, which are crucial for the treatment of critical coronavirus-affected patients.

The centre has assured that the demand and supply of medical oxygen are being monitored round the clock. Last night, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan took to Twitter to say that in order to address the exponential spike in the cases the government has increased the "quota of oxygen" for seven states- Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Delhi.

Over two lakh cases have been recorded every day since April 15, while the centre remarked that the cases are yet to hit the peak. Experts still have not found out when the cases will decline.

Five states recorded the biggest single-day spike in the cases of the coronavirus- Maharashtra with (67,468), Uttar Pradesh with 33,106, Delhi with 24,638, Karnataka with 23,558, and Kerala with 22,414.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst COVID-19 affected state in the country reporting the highest number of Covid deaths in a day at 568. The Uddhav Thackeray government has announced new COVID guidelines and curbs under the "break-the-chain" program. The new rules state that all offices, private or government that are not directly linked to COVID-19 management will be capped at 15 percent. Only 25 attendees will be permitted in weddings and the use of private vehicles, excluding buses, will only be for essential services.

The National Capital is undergoing a severe crisis of medical oxygen. The High Court took a jab at the centre while saying "How is the government so oblivious to the reality on ground? You can't have people die because there is no oxygen." The High Court further instructed the state government by saying "Beg, borrow, steal... it's your job."

West Bengal today goes through the sixth poll of the Vidhan Sabha elections with politicians holding public rallies despite the alarming surge in the cases of the novel coronavirus. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is to attend 3 poll meetings today whereas CM Mamata Banerjee will hold 4 public meetings in North and Central Bengal. This has invited severe criticisms from people throughout the country.

As per official government data, 13.22 doses of COVID vaccines have been administered so far.
