INDORE: Following the collapse of a stepwell at a temple in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, many people are suspected to be trapped. Over 25 people are suspected to have fallen inside an ancient "bavdi" (a big well) that is part of the Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal Temple in Indore after its roof fell during the Ram Navami festival.

The ancient bavdi's ceiling collapsed as a result of the vast number of people who had congregated there. Police and neighbours can be seen attempting to rescue the devotees stuck in the collapsed stepwell in a video posted by the news agency ANI.

According to his office, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has taken notice of the tragedy and directed regional authorities to expedite the rescue effort. "CMO communicates regularly with the Indore district government. The district government and top police personnel from Indore are on the scene. The devotees are being evacuated through efforts. Also, several people have been saved," the statement said.

Seven individuals are still stuck inside the stepwell, but a total of 18 people have been pulled out and sent to the hospital. According to CMO, numerous ambulances were dispatched along with the presence of the administration, which included the police, district administration, and SDRF.

A day prior to this episode, two National Institute of Technology (NIT) students were reported to have drowned in a canal on the outskirts of Kurukshetra. Rahul from Bihar and Anubhav from Uttar Pradesh have been named as the deceased. They were in their final year of the BTech (civil engineering) programme.

The divers assisted in retrieving the pair's bodies, which were then taken to the civil hospital for an autopsy. The head of the Kurukshetra University (KU) police station shared information. Mange Ram claimed that on Tuesday night, when a group of students living in the hostel walked to the canal, the incident happened.

According to the police, one of the teenagers initially slipped into the canal as his friend dove in to assist him. Soon after learning of the occurrence, institute representatives and a police squad arrived at the canal and started conducting searches with the aid of divers.
