JAMMU: According to an Army statement on Wednesday, an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in J&K's Poonch district was foiled by security forces, during which three terrorists were apprehended while a soldier was wounded in exchange of fire.
This was the first time in the 3 decades old militancy in J&K that an IED inside an innocuous- looking pressure cooker made in Afghanistan was found. Significantly, the pressure cooker was made in Afghanistan and had markings that read in Urdu- Pir Baba Manufacturer, Afghan Pressure Cooker.
The Army repelled a major attempt to smuggle arms and narcotics into the state when they managed to nab three infiltrators after an exchange of fire. The incident happened close to the border fence along the Line of Control in Poonch region of Jammu and Kashmir, officials informed.
The firing at forward Karmara village in the Gulpur sector happened early in the morning and injured an Army jawan, along with one of the arrested suspects, they claimed.
Noticing suspicious movement, the troops protecting the line challenged the people, which prompted a gunfight leading to the injuries.
The entire area was immediately cordoned off by the security forces, resulting in the arrest of three people, one of whom was injured, along with a shipment of drugs and weapons, according to the officials. An Army jawan also sustained injuries.
The three arrested were identified by the authorities as Mohd Farooq (26), who sustained a bullet injury in his leg, Mohd Riaz (23) and Mohd Zubair (22), all residents of Karmara.
It was believed by the officials that the three were intercepted by the troops when they were trying to smuggle the arms and drugs into this side. It is suspected that they received the shipment of arms and ammunition from across the border.
The seizure of items from the arrested individuals included an AK assault rifle, two pistols, six grenades, an IED hidden inside a pressure cooker, and 20 suspected heroin packets.
