Kashmir Village Not to Celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr After Ambush on Army Truck by Terrorists

SRINAGAR: A truck belonging to the Indian Army was ambushed by terrorists in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir leaving several soldiers dead. The vehicle was on its way carrying supplies for the iftar celebrations in the Sagiote region of the state.

The food supplies were being transported from the headquarters of the Rashtriya Rifles in Balakote. The truck also collected items from Basooni and the Bhimber Gali on their way to the Sangoite village. It included supplies including fruits and other necessary materials aimed for the iftar celebrations in the village.

The ambush took place at around 3 PM when the vehicle was approaching its destination leaving five soldiers belonging to Rashtriya Rifles dead. Multiple unidentified terrorists had set up an ambush in advance and launched attacks from multiple directions on the vehicle.

The Rashtriya Rifles have a strong presence in the region due to the frequent movement of convoys between the Poonch and the Rajouri sectors of the state.

Eid ul Fitr is being celebrated across the country on Saturday, by the Sagiote village of Jammu and Kashmir has decided against celebrating this festival this year. This decision has been taken as a protest against the terrorists who ambushed the truck carrying food for the villages.

The Sarpanch of the Sangiote Panchayat, Mukhtiaz Khan who was among those invited for the iftar mentioned, “What iftar will we celebrate when five of our soldiers were martyred in this unfortunate incident.” He also mentioned that the incident created a condition of sadness in the village and the entire region, owing to which they have decided not to celebrate the annual festival this year. Only ceremonial namaz will be offered on the occasion, but no celebrations will take place.

Atleast 12 people were detained by the forces for questioning in relation to the incident and a massive manhunt has been launched to detect the perpetrators including drones and helicopters along with the ground forces.
