landslides triggered by torrential rain has completely blockaded the National
Highway 10 in Sikkim which has cut off the state from the rest of the country.
According to reports the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) personnel were deployed in the spot to clean the highway at the 29 Mile area in West Bengal's Kalimpong where landslides caused by torrential rain.
"The debris from the overnight landslide has covered almost 70 m stretches and it will take some time to clear the road for one-way traffic," sources said.
Meanwhile, vehicles has taken an alternative narrower and longer road.
The area, about 60 km from the Sikkim border town of Rangpo, is a trouble spot on the state's lifeline NH-10. It was blocked due to landslides at least four times so far this monsoon.
Earlier, a landslide at Sonapur near Meghalaya border since morning disrupted road communication between Assam and Meghalaya at National Highway 06 affecting vehicular traffic, said an official release. The landslide occurred in the Kuliang village of East Jaintia Hills district. "There has been a landslide at Kuliang Village on NH06 as of 7 AM on August 2. All efforts are on to clear the road as soon as possible," East Jaintia Hills Police said.
According to reports, no injuries have been reported so far but the road blockade has created massive traffic chaos. Earlier in national news, a massive landslide occurred at Kamrau in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district, blocking National Highway 707 near Barwas, on Friday owing to heavy rainfall in the region. However, no loss of life was reported. The video of virtually the entire mountain going downhill was shared by the State Disaster Management Authority. The Paonta Sahib-Shillai highway was closed for the traffic after a 100 metre road stretch caved in.
