Imphal: As per the data issued by the Food Safely and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) that falls under the Union Health Ministry, Manipur has ranked third in this year's State Food Safty Index (SFSI).
It is two be noted that two north-eastern states of India claimed two of the top 3 spots. While Goa came in first among small states in the ranking, the second position was held by Meghalaya and the third place was held by Manipur.
Among large states, Gujarat took the top spot with 72 points. Kerela came in second with 70 points followed by Tamil Nadu who scored 64 points.
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had earlier released the report of the State Food Safety Index for the year 2020-2021.
The State Food Safety Index is a step towards measuring the food safety standards across the nation. As per the FSSAI, there are 3 categories by which the report of SFSI is prepared. The categories are large states, small states and union territories. This is done to ensure comparability among similar entities.
Nine leading states and Union Territories of the 2020-21 food safety index were felicitated by the Union Health Minister upon releasing this year's result. The criteria upon which the states are judged are human resource and institutional data, compliance, food testing-infrastructure and surveillance, training and capacity building and consumer empowerment.
