JAIPUR: A 30-year-old woman who was allegedly raped and set ablaze by a man in Rajasthan's Barmer district on Thursday passed away late on Friday night while receiving treatment at a public hospital in Jodhpur, according to the police, who also announced that they had apprehended the suspect who had been escaping ever since.

The development has been confirmed by Barmer Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nitesh Arya. As per the police, the initial information report also includes Section 302 of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC) (the penalty for murder). They stated once autopsy is completed, the body would be given to the family members.

In the FIR filed by the woman's husband, it is stated that on Thursday, when his wife was home alone because he had left for work and their kids were at school, the accused, Shakur Khan, broke in and sexually assaulted her.

When their neighbour heard his wife crying, he ran to help her, but the accused pushed the neighbour away, doused his wife in an acid-like substance, set her ablaze, and then fled the scene. The woman, who is a mother of two, sustained 40–50% burn injuries as a result of the attack.

She was initially admitted to a government hospital in Balotra before being transferred to a more advanced medical facility in Jodhpur, where she passed away while receiving care. The accused has been identified as Shakur Khan.

Police caught him late on Friday night. Authorities have filed a case under IPC sections 302 (punishment for murder), 376 (punishment for rape), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous harm with dangerous objects or methods), 450 (house trespass in order to commit an offence punishable by life in prison), and other sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
