Mumbai: Life in Mumbai was disrupted after heavy rains lashed Mumbai overnight leading to flooding in many parts of the Maximum City. Rail and road traffic was severely affected. The situation is expected to turn worse with the Met department forecasting more heavy rains in parts of Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.
Rains picked up late on Tuesday evening and the downpour overnight submerged low-lying areas throwing normal life out of gear.
Public transport services have been hit. Several vehicles broke down due to waterlogging in the streets affecting traffic movement.
Suburban services of local trains have been suspended following heavy rains along the tracks, railways officials said.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert (heavy rain at isolated places) for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad and an orange alert (heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places) for Palghar. IMD has warned that the rains could lead to localized flooding and waterlogging in low lying areas.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all offices and establishments except people in emergency services.
