Meet Bharath Subramaniyam: India's 73 Chess Grandmaster At The Age Of Fourteen

NEW DELHI: On Sunday 9 January the 73rd Chess GM (Grandmaster) of India was announced and a young boy of 14 years old named Bharath Subramaniyam has won the title.

Bharath had completed the 3rd and final grandmaster norms at the Vergani Cup Open in Italy and scored a total of 6.5 points in the 9 levels. He scored the same as the other four players and as a whole, he finished seventh at the event.

The international Chess tournament of the Vergani Cup Open was organized on Sunday 9 January in Callotica town of Italy.

The young boy has created a historic moment by becoming the 73rd Chess Grandmaster of the country at the age of 14. Bharath Subramaniyam is a Chennai-based chess player known widely in his region for various records in chess and became International Master in the year 2019 at the age of 11.

To get the title of Grandmaster (GM), a player must secure 3 GM norms and has to cross the live rating of 2,500 Elo points. Subramaniyam has successfully touched the needed Elo mark which made him the 73rd India's Chess Grandmaster.

The teenager GM received congratulatory wishes from AICF (All India Chess Federation) for such a great achievement. The AICF took to Twitter to share the big news congratulating the talented kid Subramaniyam.

The whole Chess Community of the country celebrates the success of the little boy from Chennai that made India proud and created history.

Another player from India Lalith Babu also participated in the Chess competition in Vergani Cup Open and won the title of Grandmaster MR by securing 9th position.

Babu managed to gather seven points out of nine. For the highest mark, he was tied with Grandmaster Niemann Hans Moke from America along with two others namely Nurgyul Salimova from Bulgaria and Vitaliy Bernadskiy from Ukraine.

Notably, at the time of the tie break, the Indian players had a better score that helped Babu win the title. American player Moke became the runner-up and Anton Korobov from Ukraine won the fifth rank.
