MeitY Takes Strong Stand Against Fake News on YouTube and Social Media

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in India has intensified its efforts to combat the proliferation of "fake news channels" on Google-owned video-sharing platform YouTube. MeitY has issued a stern advisory, calling upon YouTube to take legal action against these deceptive channels. As part of this initiative, MeitY has recommended that YouTube incorporate a prominent disclaimer stating "news not verified" on content originating from these fake news channels.

Not limiting its focus to YouTube, the Indian IT Ministry has also directed major social media platforms with user bases exceeding five million members to develop and submit action plans within a ten-day timeframe. These action plans are expected to outline the platforms' strategies for combating fake news and other forms of unlawful content.

This directive forms part of a broader campaign to curb the spread of disinformation, misinformation, and fake news across digital platforms in India. It reflects the government's escalating concern regarding the influence and reach of unverified or misleading news sources in the country.

YouTube has been under scrutiny from the IT Ministry for various reasons recently. Just earlier this month, the IT Ministry demanded the removal of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) from the platform or face severe consequences. In response, YouTube emphatically reiterated its "zero-tolerance policy" towards CSAM and related content. The platform reaffirmed its commitment to using advanced technology and dedicated teams to swiftly detect and remove such content, underlining its dedication to child safety.

Similarly, the encrypted messaging platform, Telegram, also received a directive to address issues related to Child Pornography (CP), CSAM, Rape, and Gang Rape (RGR) content on its platform. Telegram stressed its unwavering commitment to upholding both legal and ethical standards, particularly when dealing with such grave issues. The platform reiterated its "zero-tolerance policy" for any form of unlawful activities on its platform, ensuring that safety and legality remain paramount.

These recent developments underscore the Indian government's unwavering commitment to combating online content that poses risks to the well-being and safety of its citizens, particularly children. Simultaneously, the government is actively taking measures to counter the proliferation of disinformation and fake news, recognizing the significant consequences that such misinformation can have on society at large. With these actions, India is actively working to create a safer and more secure digital environment for its citizens.
