Bhopal: The fortune of a labourer hailing from Madhya Pradesh has turned overnight after he unearthed a 26.11 – carat diamond, which is worth over a whopping Rs 1 crore, in a shallow mine.
Sushil Shukla, a resident of Kishoreganj in Panna town, along with his associates found the precious stone in a shallow mine that is close to the Krishna Kalyanpur area.
It has been reported that the precious gem will be put up for auction in the next few days and the miner would get the proceeds after government royalty and taxes are deducted.
Ravi Patel, Panna's diamond officer, has said that the precious stone may fetch up to Rs 1.20 crore in auction.
Sushil runs a small scale brick kiln business on rented land and he along with his family have been involved in the diamond mining work for the last 20 years.
Shukla told the media that this happened to be the first time that such a precious gem has been unearthed by him. He also said that he will use the money to set up a business.
As per officials, the Panna district, which is 380 kilometres away from the capital city of Bhopal, has massive reserves which are estimated to be containing diamonds worth a whopping 12 lakh carats.
The Panna district also happens to be India's only operational diamond mine and it has a history of valuable discoveries.
Last year, a labourer hailing from Madhya Pradesh unearthed three diamonds worth Rs 30 lakh to 35 lakh in the district. Prior to this discovery, another person found a 10.69-carat diamond in Panna.
However, the biggest discovery happened back in 2018, when Motilal Prajapati, a 50-year-old labourer from Bundelkhand, stumbled upon a diamond worth Rs 1.5 crore near the Krishna Kalyanpur Patti village.
The diamond weighed 42.9 carats and had the second-highest value in terms of a gemstone's mass in the history of the mines in the Bundelkhand district.
