New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has received an e-mail threatening to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The sender has issued a warning by saying that at least 20 sleeper cells had been activated for the plot to assassinate PM Modi. The e-mail warned that these sleeper cells are also in possession of 20 kg RDX.

The threat mail mentioned that he was ready to harm millions of people along with PM Modi.

"…I have met with some terrorists, they are going to help with rdx, I am happy that I have got bombs very easily and now I will blast everywhere… I have planned it, 20 sleeper cells will be activated and millions of people will be killed…" the mail said.

The NIA is trying to trace the sender and the intelligence agencies are tracking the IP address of the sender.

It is to be noted that the NIA happens to be the primary counter - terrorist task force of India.

Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil reacted to the letter and told the media that if anyone threatens the country's PM, it's not right. He added that this will be investigated if the letter has originated from Maharashtra. The truth will be revealed, he concluded.

Earlier in 2018, the Maharashtra police told a court that a plot to assassinate PM Modi in a "Rajiv Gandhi-type incident" during one of his roadshows was revealed in a letter seized from a suspected Maoist.

The police claimed that the letter which was dated on April 18, 2017 and addressed to one "Comrade Prakash" was recovered from the house of Rona Wilson, an activist based in Delhi.
