Nirbhaya case: President Ram Nath Kovind rejects convict Mukesh Singh's mercy plea

NEW DELHI: President Ram Nath Kovind has rejected the mercy petition of Mukesh Singh, one of the four death row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case.

The mercy petition was forwarded by the Ministry of Home Affairs, with a recommendation that it should be rejected, suggested reports. The petition was sent to the Home Ministry by Lieutenant Governor of Delhi after the Delhi government recommended its rejection.

On Wednesday, the Delhi government had informed the high court that because of the convict's mercy petition, the criminals accused in Nirbhaya won't be hanged on January 22.

“It is a strategic plan on how to prolong the matter," the bench said citing delay over bringing such criminals to justice.

After seven long years, respite came to Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi after a Delhi court issued death sentences to the four convicts involved in the 2012 brutal rape and murder of a young girl in Delhi. The convicts are expected to be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail in Delhi.

The judges pronounced the order after hearing a plea that sought the issue of ‘black warrant’ against the four convicts in the Nirbhaya case.
