NEW DELHI: On Sunday the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi arrived at Glasgow, for the upcoming COP26 Climate Summit. On the framework of the United Nations (UN) meeting, the Prime Minister will conduct bilateral meetings with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The Prime Minister will begin the UK part of his European visit with a meeting with community leaders and Indologists located in Scotland on Monday morning, after flying in from the G20 Summit in Italy.
He will then go to the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow for the opening ceremony of the World Leaders' Summit (WLS) of the 26th Conference of Parties (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), where he will address the summit plenary session.
The 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference is scheduled to be held between 31st October 2021 to 12th November 2021 under the core presidency of the United Kingdom and Italy. The COP26 is the 26th conference of parties and the third meeting of parties to the Paris Agreement. According to the Paris Agreement, the conference must be held every 5year term. Under the Paris Agreement, member countries pledged to limit their greenhouse emission gas. The pledge was known as Nationally Determined Contribution. The Paris Agreement was signed in the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
The COP26 Climate Summit was originally planned to be held in 2020 in Scotland but was postponed 12 months for the COVID-19 Pandemic around the world.
Initially, the Minister of Energy and Clean Growth, Claire Perry O'Neill was appointed as the president but later she was removed when she stepped down as an MP. Now the Presidency is held by the United Kingdoms.
