NEW DELHI: President Ram Nath Kovind today underwent a successful bypass surgery at All India Institute of Medical Sciences AIIMS in Delhi.

On March 26 after complaining of chest discomfort the President visited the Army Hospital (Research And Referral) in New Delhi for a routine check-up. A medical bulletin issued by the hospital said the 75-year-old is undergoing a routine check-up and is under observation. His condition was said to be stable.

Later the President was shifted to AIIMS on Saturday for further treatment. On Tuesday he underwent successful bypass surgery at the hospital.

A statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 27 stated that the President is stable and under the observation of experts. "The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind has been shifted to the AIIMS, Delhi, in the afternoon today (March 27, 2021). Post investigations, doctors have advised him to undergo a planned bypass procedure which is expected to be performed on the morning of March 30, Tuesday. The President's health is stable and he is under the care of the experts at the AIIMS," it stated.

Taking to Twitter, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed, "The President of India, Shri Ramnath Kovind has undergone a successful bypass surgery at AIIMS, Delhi. I congratulate the team of Doctors for successful operation. Spoke to Director AIIMS to enquire about Rashtrapatiji's health. Praying for his well-being and speedy recovery."

Several leaders including Nepal Prime Minister of Nepal K P Sharma Oli has wished the President a speedy recovery. "I wish for a speedy recovery and wellness to President of India H.E. Shri Ram Nath Kovind after a successful bypass surgery today," tweeted Oli.

A day after President Kovind was admitted to the hospital, he continued to discharge his works responsibilities. He recently approved the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) (Amendment) Bill 2021, which was passed by Parliament last week. The Union Home Ministry will now determine when it comes into effect.

The bill is considered to be a major setback to Delhi's ruling AAP government, which ensures more constitutional powers to the Central government-appointed Lt. Governor as against the Delhi Assembly. The bill makes it mandatory for the elected Delhi government to seek LG's opinion before any executive action. However, the AAP has been opposing the Bill claiming that it would stall Delhi's progress by giving undue powers to the Lieutenant Governor.
