CHANDIGARH: Because the state is on high alert for Baishakhi, the new year's holiday, all leave for Punjab police officers has been cancelled until April 14, which is one week from today.
Amritpal Singh, a fugitive radical Sikh leader, has been pleading with Shri Akal Takht Sahib to host a "Sarbat Khalsa" to talk about Sikh issues. Giani Harpreet Singh, the jathedar of the Akal Takhth, scheduled a three-day annual gathering at Takht Damdama Sahib on Thursday to commemorate Baisakhi.
"The annual gathering and Sarbat Khalsa" differ significantly. An official told media that the gathering was to celebrate Baisakhi and that the Akal Takht was not truly approving Amritpal Singh's demand of the Sarbat Khalsa.
Amritpal Singh, the leader of Waris Punjab De, has been missing since March 18. Despite this, he has released two videos and one audio clip. It was also widely rumoured that he would surrender before Baisakhi at the Golden Temple or another shrine.
Amritpal Singh's surrender was not confirmed by the Punjab Police, but they had earlier claimed that there was sufficient security in place. As new rumours of Amritpal Singh's potential surrender started to circulate on Friday, Punjab Police declared that the rumours were unfounded.
Amritpal Singh told his supporters in his messages that he would have given in if the Punjab police had come to his residence to arrest him, and did not pass a hint regarding surrender. But the Punjab police pursued him and detained numerous Sikh teenagers.
It is unknown where Amritpal Singh is right now. According to CCTV evidence, Amritpal Singh may have escaped from Punjab to Haryana and then to Delhi. Amritpal Singh was rumoured to have returned to Punjab last week.
