New Delhi: Admitting the continuous defeat of Congress and the path being difficult ahead, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday asserted the revival of the party is essential for democracy as a whole.
"The road ahead for Congress is more challenging than ever before, our spirit of resilience is under severe test. The revival of Congress is not just a matter of importance to us (the party members), it is essential for our democracy and society as well," Sonia Gandhi admitted at the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meeting.
While chairing a meeting of the parliamentary party, she also discussed the current political situation and the party's strategy in both houses of Parliament.
In her address, she also said that unity at every level in the party is important as well as paramount.
Notably, after facing defeat in five states, the opposing voices in the Congress started rising again following which a section within the party openly opposed the planning policy and leadership of the party which Sonia Gandhi has pacified with great difficulty.
Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury were also present in the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meeting.
This was the first CPP meeting of the Congress party, which had seen defeat in the elections of five states.
In the meeting, the Congress President also lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing them of disturbing social harmony in the country and distorting history.
''The party will not allow this divisive policy of BJP to succeed,'' she added.
