NEW DELHI: In honour of his extraordinary contributions to music and the arts, Birmingham City University recently conferred an honorary doctorate on renowned Indian musician and singer Shankar Mahadevan. The important event was held on June 23 at the acclaimed Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Expressing his gratitude, the 56-year-old singer humbly acknowledged the significance of this honor. In an interview with the media, Mahadevan conveyed, "This is truly special. I feel privileged and honored. It is a testament to the body of work I have accomplished. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Birmingham City University and all the individuals involved in bestowing this esteemed and legendary doctorate upon me. This occasion serves as a reminder that I must continue to work even harder, create more beautiful songs, and spread the joy of Indian classical music throughout the world."

Mahadevan also highlighted the profound impact that receiving an honorary doctorate from an artist he admires has had on his aspirations. He stated, "When an artist you look up to confers such a prestigious recognition upon you, it becomes a goal you strive to achieve. It feels as though dreams are manifesting right before your eyes. It instills a sense of determination and inspires the younger generation to work diligently, aiming to reach the same heights. Just as I used to admire maestros like John McLaughlin and Ustad Zakir Hussain, who were present at the ceremony to honor me, it is wonderful to set a positive example for the next generation."

The honorary ceremony was graced by the presence of acclaimed guitarist John McLaughlin and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, both renowned figures in the music industry. Mahadevan took to Instagram to share his delight, posting a picture with them and captioning it, "Met the maestros!!! What a blessing."

During a trade mission event in Mumbai in November of the previous year, Andy Street, the mayor of West Midlands County in the UK, announced receiving this distinguished accolade. The excitement and suspense around this information helped to prepare everyone for the extraordinary event that would take place months later.

During the event, the choir was joined on stage by the legendary Shakti trio—Ustad Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, and John McLaughlin. Together, they mesmerized the audience with performances of popular Bollywood numbers, and Mahadevan captivated the crowd with his timeless classic, 'Breathless.'

Shankar Mahadevan has garnered immense acclaim throughout his career for his chart-topping tracks, such as 'Maa Tujhe Salaam,' 'Aaj Kal Zindagi,' 'Uff Teri Ada,' 'Tere Naina,' 'Kay Sera Sera,' and 'Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe,' among numerous others. His versatility, innovation, and deep connection to Indian classical music have made him a beloved figure in the industry.

The conferment of an honorary doctorate upon Shankar Mahadevan by Birmingham City University serves as a testament to his remarkable talent, dedication, and invaluable contributions to the world of music. This recognition not only honors his past achievements but also signifies the immense potential he possesses to continue enchanting audiences and leaving a lasting impact on the music industry.
