MUMBAI: Kangana Ranaut, who is known for making outspoken remarks,
has given her thoughts on the continuing Hijab debate in Karnataka.
Kangana Ranaut commented on author Anand Ranganathan's piece, by sharing a collage on the Instagram story of two photographs of ladies, one in swimsuits and the other in burqas, taken nearly five decades apart, "If you want to show courage, show it by not wearing a burqa in Afghanistan. Learn to break free, not cage yourself."
Shabana Azmi, a renowned actress, has slammed Kangana Ranaut
for her divisive comments on India's ongoing hijab debate. Shabana questioned
on Twitter, "Correct me if I'm wrong but Afghanistan is a theocratic state
and when I last checked India was a secular democratic republic?!!"
Shabana's husband, the acclaimed lyricist Javed Akhtar, spoke out against the Hijab debate in India on Wednesday, by saying, "I have never been in favour of Hijab or Burqa. I still stand by that, but at the same time, I have nothing but deep contempt for these mobs of hooligans who are trying to intimidate a small group of girls and that too unsuccessfully. Is this their idea of 'MANLINESS'. What a pity."
Protest occur due to the administration of a government pre-university college in Udupi, Karnataka, which barred six Muslim girls from attending classes because they wore hijab. Some Hindu students showed up wearing saffron scarves to protest the wearing of the hijab.
The demonstrations have drawn the attention of the whole country, and the ladies battling for their right to worship their religion have received sympathizers from all throughout the country.
Karnataka HC on Thursday, February 10, barred students from wearing any religious clothing to high schools and colleges, including headscarves and saffron shawls, while the issue is still being considered by HC.
Students from Karnataka have petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the high court's interim judgement in the continuing hijab dispute.
