Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said that the situation in the country was not pleasant due to the policy of 'divide and rule.'

She was speaking during participation in prayer for Eid-al-Fitr on a rain-drenched Red Road in Kolkata, where she pleaded with the people to not be scared and instead keep fighting for a bright future.

"The situation in the country is not fine. The policy of divide and rule and politics of isolation going on in the country are not correct. Do not be scared and keep on fighting," she said.

Mamata addressed a gathering of around 14,000 people for the Eid prayer held on Red Road, where she assured them that neither she nor her party nor her government will do anything which will disappoint them.

The West Bengal CM took to her official Twitter handle to greet the masses on the occasion of Eid and conveyed her best wishes.

"Many are jealous of the culture of unity in West Bengal. The spirit of unity that exists in West Bengal is rare. Politics to create division in the country is going on. This is not good for the country. But we will have to remain united and work together. Some people are spreading falsehoods to create tension among Hindus and Muslims. We will have to resist them together," said Banerjee.

The TMC supremo added that the people must remain united at this crucial juncture and she also appealed to everyone to refrain from becoming victims of communal instigation.

The CM, while speaking on the occasion, slammed the central government for "interfering in the internal affairs of the state."

Mamata concluded by saying that an attempt is being made to destroy the federal and democratic structure of the country.
