BATHINDA: Almost a week after the indent of the killing of four soldiers in the Bathinda Military Station, a fellow soldier was arrested on the charges of their murder.

On April 12, four Indian Army soldiers were reportedly shot while they were sleeping in their barracks. Initially, it was assumed that an intruder had infiltrated the camp and fled into the nearby jungle soon after killing the soldiers. However, on Monday, officials with the Punjab Police and the Army HQ South Western Command mentioned that the soldier shot dead his four colleagues “due to personal reasons/animosity” while speaking about the arrest.

However, the state police mentioned that the arrested soldier is a Gunner with the 80 Medium Regiment of the Artillery. They also mentioned that the soldier faced sexual abuse repeatedly over a long period of time and the murder of the four responsible for the same was an act of revenge by the soldier. Bathinda SSP Gulneet Singh Khurana confirmed the arrest of the soldier from the 80 Medium Regiment.

In order to mislead the people from the investigating agencies, a person had falsely stated that he had seen two masked individuals clad in kurtas and pyjamas running towards a forest area nearby after committing the crimes.

The SSP Bathinda mentioned, “All I can say is that there are personal reasons which we cannot disclose to the media and I would request you to not ask further.” He also mentioned that further investigations will proceed after the remand for the accused is granted by the court.

The accused had stolen the rifle earlier and hid it till the opportunity arrived. He checked multiple times if the victims had fallen asleep before murdering them. Following the incident, he dumped the weapon into a sewage pit and was recovered during the investigation.
