CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, DMK chief M K Stalin has promised that the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act will not be allowed in Tamil Nadu if his party is voted to power in the April 6 Assembly elections.
Stalin further slammed the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, AIADMK for "supporting the BJP government in regard to the CAA in the Parliament.
While blaming the ruling party for the ''plight'' of minorities all over the country, Stalin stated that the bill would not have seen the light of the day if the political parties liked AIADMK and PMK voted against the bill.
Addressing an election rally, he assured that his party will not implement the CAA if it comes to power in the state. He further charged the ruling AIADMK with "enacting a drama" on the matter ahead of the polls.
Speaking about the farmers bill he slammed Chief Minister K Palaniswami for not passing an assembly resolution against the three contentious central farm laws, facing stiff resistance from farmers agitating outside Delhi for about four months, pointing out that states like Punjab, West Bengal and Kerala had done so.
Moreover, he promised to do the same in the state if his party won the April 6 polls and formed the government.
In the Tamil Nadu assembly polls for the 234 seats is scheduled to be held in a single phase on April 6, despite the main battle between the DMK-Congress alliance and the AIADMK-BJP coalition, smaller parties and alliances are set to make the election more interesting. Tamil Nadu will begin counting votes on May 2.
Meanwhile, the CAA has been an election issue not only in Tamil Nadu but prominently in Assam and West Bengal. The BJP government has kept mum over the implementation of CAA in Assam, which is the epicentre of the large scale protest that the country has witnessed in 2019. On the contrary the saffron party has included the implementation of the law in its West Bengal manifesto. Several political leaders have slammed the BJP for maintaining a varying stance on the law in both the states.
