NEW DELHI: The new Parliament building will be officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28.
More than 1,200 MPs can reside in the four-story structure. In place of the current capacities of 543 and 250, respectively, the new structure, which is located next to the current Parliament House, will have space for 888 Lok Sabha members and 300 Rajya Sabha members.
Parliament's current circular structure, which will soon turn 100 years old, was finished in 1927. This building didn't have enough room to accommodate the needs of the time. The effectiveness of the Members' work was being hampered in both Houses by a lack of convenient arrangements for the MPs' attendance at meetings.
In light of the aforementioned, resolutions requesting the government to establish a new Parliament building were passed by both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
On Thursday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla welcomed the Prime Minister to the dedication of the new Parliament building.
The new Parliament building, being built by Tata Projects Ltd., would include a magnificent constitution hall to highlight India's democratic legacy, a lounge for lawmakers, a library, many committee rooms, dining places and plenty of parking. Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha will have new dress codes for marshals in the next parliament.
“The new building symbolizes the spirit of self-reliant India or Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” the government said in a release. An elaborate event to dedicate the new structure was reportedly planned for the ninth anniversary of the Modi administration.
On May 26, 2014, PM Narendra Modi took the oath of office, making it nine years ago.
PM Modi laid the cornerstone for the new Parliament building in December 2020. The new structure is a component of the Central Vista's revitalization as the country's power corridor.
