Tihar jail female prisoner raped in moving train by Delhi Armed Police constable

A recent incident of a Tihar jail woman prisoner being raped by a Delhi Police constable has once again pointed at the burning issue of a sexual offense against women. The crime against women in India has increased in such a rapid and shameful rate that one feels insecure even in the hands of the ones who are vested with the responsibilities of securing and safeguarding people.

This is shameful crime took place in a sleeper coach of the Nandan Kanan Express when a women prisoner was moving back from West Bengal to Delhi after attending a court hearing in Murshidabad. The prisoner alleged that she was being raped in the toilet of the moving train by a Delhi Police constable. Notably, the constable was one of the securities entitled to escort her on her journey. The woman later lodged a complaint at the New Delhi Railway Station police station alleging the constable of her rape.

As stated by the 42-year-old prisoner to her doctor in New Delhi’ s Tihar Jail, her rape took place on August 3. On informing the doctor, she was immediately referred to the government hospital for a medical examination. The Delhi Armed Police wing is generally entitled with the responsibilities of escorting the prisoners to and from the court hearings and hence, the woman too was escorted by the constable and some others.

The escorts entitled to guard the female prisoner compromised of the male constable and two women constables. The prisoner was taken to West Bengal for her court hearing. As stated by the prisoner, she was being escorted to the toilet by the policewomen, but then the constable who was in charge of the escort team asked them to go back and stayed there. He then forced himself into the toilet and raped the prisoner.

On the complaint of the prisoner has been lodged under Section 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
