Kasaragod: Two auto drivers from Kerala has been ferrying around 200 COVID-19 patients to testing centres in the last two months. Harish Karuvachery and Mayil Ratheesh from Kerala's Kasaragod has been doing the job of ambulances, as there is a shortage of ambulance in the area.

Karuvachery, one of the two auto drivers said that they are not running any ambulance service. Due to the shortage in ambulances, they take the asymptomatic patients to the testing or treatment centre.

The hospital, Nileshwar Taluk Hospital appointed the two auto drivers in the month of August to ferry patients as the ambulances could not manage with the rising number of cases. Both of them, Karuvachery and Ratheesh were tested twice for COVID and were negative both the times.

They are ever ready to bring patients to the treatment centre or hospital. Masks, gloves, sanitiser, shampoo, and spray guns are provided to them.

Inside the Auto, a transparent sheet separates the passenger cabin from the driver's seat. In that way, the drivers never come in contact with the passenger. Both of them have also dropped patients in faraway places from Kasaragod, such as Ravaneshwaran and Cheruvathur.
