BENGALURU: Two people travelling from different locations to the country were apprehended at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) for smuggling gold in their innerwear.
While the man brought the gold by hiding it in his underwear, the woman had it hidden inside her customized sports bra. The cost of the gold smuggled in by the man is said to be worth Rs 17.5 lakhs. And the woman- smuggled gold worth Rs 44.4 lakhs into the country.
The woman is said to have travelled to the country from Dubai while the man came from Abu Dhabi. Customs officials at the airport apprehended them at the airport.
According to sources, the woman had landed at the Kempegowda International Airport on the morning of October 8 from the Emirates Airlines flight EK 564 from Dubai. Customs officials checking the passengers at the arrival point noticed irregularities in the posture of the woman as she passed through. She was not able to give proper answers to the questioning by female officials in the airport. The tense situation of the passenger made the officials conduct a more thorough check, revealing the precious gold.
The man flew to India on Etihad Airways flight EY 216 early on Sunday morning. He was arrested soon after his landing at Kempegowda International Airport. Bandages were applied to the waist of his underpants, which contained 866 grams of gold paste worth Rs 44,37,453 in total. He was accused of smuggling the precious metal and avoiding paying taxes on goods.
A similar incident involved a traveller who came from Mumbai to the airport in Bengaluru on Monday evening and was held for possessing three crude gold chains weighing a combined 899 grams. He took a flight from Mumbai to Dubai.
Sources claim that he took the gold chains worth Rs 46.7 lakh off the plane and brought them on the domestic trip to Bengaluru. Officials kept the identities of the three suspects a secret while an investigation was still going on.
