NEW DELHI: The Global Head of the United Nations Development Programme, Achim Steiner called on the Minister of Development of North East Region and Tourism and Culture, Government of India, G Krishan Reddy on the topics related to the development of the region. They held discussions about the overall development of the Northeastern states of India while working with the United Nations Development Programme.

Union Minister G Krishan Reddy welcomed the United Nations Development Programme head Achim Striner led delegations for the meeting. He also thanked the UNDP head for the continued support of the international organisation towards the development of the northeastern region.

“Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the DoNER Ministry is committed to act first and act fast for the Region so that it may enjoy growth parity with the rest of the country. Support provided by United Nations Development Programme has been instrumental in promoting data-driven decision-making, including through the first Northeast Region District SDG Index. Our Ministry is committed to ensuring that Sustainable Development Goals are achieved for all in the region,” mentioned the minister in his speech.

Speaking on the occasion, Achim Steiner also appreciated the efforts of the Indian Government towards its efforts of developing the region. He also mentioned that the UNDP is committed to support the development of the Northeast region of the country. He also highlighted the efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by providing the necessary technical support as well as capacity building for improved implementation of the program.

He also pointed out that the DoNER ministry and the UNDP should work closely to improve the lifestyle as well as the livelihood opportunities of the multiple communities that reside in the region. Providing access to education as well as sustainable livelihood options through the implementation of innovative and technical solutions was also discussed.

They also agreed upon working towards an MoU for the accelerated development of the region as well as proper implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
