INDORE: The Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court recently observed that unmarried Indian girls do not engage in carnal activities unless they are provided with the assurance of marriage.

The bench comprising Justice Subodh Abhyankar stated that a boy entering into a physical relationship with a girl must realize that his actions have consequences and he must be ready to face them.

The bench observed, "India are a conservative society, it has not yet reached such level (advance or lower) of civilization where unmarried girls…indulge in carnal activities with boys just for the fun of it unless the same is backed by some future promise/assurance of marriage."

The court made said observations while hearing a case filed by a woman who alleged rape on the pretext of marriage. The man's counsel, however, argued that the woman was not a minor when the offense took place and that the sexual intercourse was consensual.

It was also argued that the girl's parents opposed her marriage as the youth is Muslim and she is a Hindu, LiveLaw reported. The State, however, stated that the accused had been raping the girl since October 2018, on the pretext of marriage but had later claimed that he was already married.

After hearing the arguments from both sides, the court stated that the accused did not deserve to be released on bail. The court rejected the bail plea of the accused and stated that the girl was committed to the relationship, which also prompted her to attempt suicide after it ended.
