New Delhi: In the history of Independent India, the country is likely to witness the first-ever execution of a female prisoner, Shabnam who is on death row for committing the heinous crime of murdering seven members of her family in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh.
As per multiple media reports, Shabnam is one of the two convicts in the sensational Amroha murder case, who will be executed in the lone female execution room in Mathura.
It was in April 2008, when Shabnam along with her lover Salim brutally murdered seven members of her family with an axe.
The case was heard in Amroha court for two years and three months. After which, on 15 July 2010, a Session's Court ruled that Shabnam and Salim should be hanged till death. Shabnam had challenged the lower court's order in Supreme Court but the apex court had upheld the decision of the lower court. Later the convicts sent a mercy petition to the President which was also rejected.
In case the authorities proceed with the hanging, Shabnam will be the first female prisoner to be hanged after India's Independence.
The first female hanging house was built in Mathura jail almost 150 years ago, however, no woman was hanged since India attained Independence. It was built during British rule inside the Mathura Jail. The only mention of this execution room in India can be found in the UP Jail Manual, 1956, which lays out elaborate rules for the execution of women convicts on death row.
The jail authorities informed that the date of hanging has not been fixed yet, but the preparation for the same has been initiated. Reportedly, Shabnam will be hanged as soon as the death warrant is issued.
According to reports, Pawan Jallad of Meerut, who hanged Nirbhaya's accused, has also inspected the hanging house twice and asked to make some improvements.
