GUWAHATI: The statement of a Congress leader, who filed a defamation case against the Chief Minister of Assam, was recorded by a local court in Uttarakhand.

The defamation case against Himanta Biswa Sarma was filed over “indecent” remarks on Congress party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

CM Sarma was accused by the Congress leader of making indecent remarks against party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi while campaigning for the Uttarakhand Assembly polls in 2022.

Ganesh Upadhyay, the complainant, who serves as the spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress, reportedly recorded his statement during a hearing related to the case, before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate in Uttarakhand on May 15.

Upadhyay pointed out that the sentiments of members of civil society had been deeply hurt by the alleged derogatory remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

It was during an election meeting held in Kichcha on February 11, 2022, according to Upadhyay, that Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “Did we ever ask Rahul Gandhi to give proof of who his father is?”

CM Sarma’s comment was a vitriolic attack, which came in response to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s questioning of the 2016 surgical strikes conducted by India within Pakistan’s territory.

Ganesh Upadhyay filed the defamation case based on the claim that Sarma’s remarks were ‘indecent’ and ‘defamatory’ towards Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

It was asserted by the Congress leader that such statements not only put a blemish on the image of senior political figures but a negative impact on public perception is also caused by these.

The next hearing in the case has been scheduled by the court for June 3, which is expected to allow both parties to present their arguments and evidence in connection with the case.

At the time of filing of the case, the Assam Congress contended that the remark of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has tarnished the image of the state.

Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah, while criticising CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s remarks, said, “Assamese are known as cultured and well-mannered people all over the world… Today, all that was reduced to dust with chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s deplorable remarks.”

“Sarma had (left Congress) and joined BJP to escape the CBI’s clutches and now he is targeting Gandhi with uncivilized and low-mannered remarks in order to escape being targeted by the RSS and BJP high command for the illegal land deals made by his family,” he had added.
