New Delhi: Whatsapp Pay is now live in India. Here is all you need to know

Whatsapp Pay is finally now live in India. Whatsapp in its blog mentioned that it wants to make money transferring as easy as sending and receiving a message.

Here are few important to things to keep in mind before using it:

Staggered rollout:

The payment service will only be rolled out 20 million WhatsApp users. At present, the messaging app has over 400 million users in India. NCPI (National Payments Corporation of India) has revealed that a 30% gap will be implemented on total payment volumes via third party payment apps from January 1, 2021.

How to register?

A bank account and a legit phone number is must to enable payments on Whatsapp. Payments can be made by clicking on the 'attachment' icon at the bottom of the screen that we normally use to send photos, videos etc.

Whatsapp will direct you to register first and ask for permission to make use of phone calls and read messages to complete the registration process.

Only for Indian numbers

Whatsapp pay can only be used by Indian numbers linked to Indian bank accounts. People with international numbers cannot use Whatsapp Pay.

Transaction limit and charges

The transaction limit for Rs 1 lakh for UPI also applies to Whatsapp.

Some UPI apps allow you to send money to people by entering their bank's account number and IFSC code. This feature is not available in Whatsapp Pay.

Whatsapp payment has been launched in India after a long wait of two years. It has partnered with leading banks including ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, State Bank of India and Jio Payments Bank. India currently has many payment apps including Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay and Whatsapp Pay from now on.
