Many Hindu women observe fast every Monday in the Assamese month of Shaun or Shravan. The Shaun month starts in late July and ends in the middle of August.
According to Hindu mythology, the Shaun month is dedicated to Lord Shiva due to which his devotes offer payers to him. In the meantime, the holy month has started and disciples start offering prayers to Lord Shiva also known as Mahadeva.
The Assamese Hindu women, who are devotees of Mahadeva, observe fast on the Mondays of Shaun as per the religious rituals. They observe the fast till the end of the month.
This year the Assamese Shaun month will end on August 16. Many Lord Shiva's devotes recites holy slokas or hymns at a specific time during the month.
What is the method for observing Mondays' fast?
According to some, Lord Shiva devotees get up from bed early in the morning. They bathe early than normal days. The devotees also wash the fetish of Lord Shiva with milk and water.
They also offer milk and Ganga Jal to goddess Parvati and Lord Nandi.Then the devotees prepare Panchamrit and wash the fetish of Mahadeva.
What do people eat?
In general, the diet during this fast includes fresh fruits, juice, milk, lassi, chaas, sabudana kheer and makhana. People often observe this one-day fast every week for one month without consuming salt. Those who can't (due to medical reasons) eat sendha namak to keep the body at ease.
What science says?
According to medical practitioners, with the arrival of monsoon, there is a sudden weather change and to keep the body healthy fasting is the key solution. It not only keeps the digestive system at ease but also helps in detoxification.
