NEW DELHI: Assam's chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, was defended by Zoho co-founder and CEO Sridhar Vembu, who also called out all of India's elite who believe that those who cannot speak, read, or write English fluently are stupid.

He continued by saying that most positions in his organisation purposefully do not require fluency in English. He also stated that the nation can advance only when we get rid of that English obsession. His tweet defending the Assam chief minister came after the minister was termed as a a "copy and paste CM" on social media.

Retweeting Sarma's tweet, Vembu wrote, “Elite India has the bias that people who do not speak/read/write fluent English (that would be at least 95% of our population) are stupid. We can only make progress when we get rid of that English obsession. At Zoho, we consciously do not require English fluency for most jobs."

On April 4, the Assam Chief Minister reacted to a video where he was using a ready-made text to complete a visitor's book while visiting a public school. He claimed that he has no "reluctance" to accept that his knowledge of Hindi and English is limited.

In the picture/video, Himanta Sarma could be seen writing in the visitor's register with a ready-made text placed right next to it.

A video with the description "Presenting the CM of Assam who can't even write a paragraph in a visitor's book without copying" has been posted by the user called Roshan Rai. Sarma claimed that he has pursued his education from an Assamese medium school.

As a Twitter user ridiculed him for allegedly duplicating words to write in a visitor's book, he firmly said about his lack of proficiency in the two languages and his efforts to acquire them. The BJP leader was praised by many commenters for his "solid" response and humility.
