26 Japanese Encephalitis Cases Reported in East Siang District of Arunachal, No Casualties

Itanagar: With the detection of 15 more cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, the total number of patients in the State infected with the vector borne disease, shot up to 26, a senior health official informed here on Wednesday.

Among the total positive cases in the State, East Siang has reported with 20 cases while, three cases have been reported from Papum Pare district including one each from Upper Subansiri, Kra Daadi and Lohit district, Director of Health Services Dr M Lego informed.

However, no casualties have been reported from any district in the State due to JE, the director added. Dr Lego said an expert team from the health department had visited Pasighat to take stock of the situation. He urged the people not to panic over the JE outbreak, saying the department has taken all necessary steps and measures to prevent the disease from further spreading.

Dr Lego stated that all the district medical officers (DMOs) have been alerted and advised to set up surveillance and take up with their respective district administration and veterinary department to ban the import of pigs and piglets from outside the State for a month. JE is a vector borne disease transmitted by the Culex group of mosquitoes and pigs play an important role in its transmission from one area to another.
