Aadhaar enrollment slow in State : Show-cause issued to firm

GUWAHATI: Abysmally slow progress of Aadhaar enrollment work in the State has forced the State General Administration Department (GAD) to issue show-cause notice to a firm engaged in the task, and more such firms are in line to get such notices.

The GAD is the notified State registrar for Aadhaar implementation. A notification towards that end was issued by the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India).

The progress of Aadhaar enrollment works in the State has been so slow that the enrollment of per day per enrollment centre of some of the firms is less than 20 persons. This has led the GAD to issue show-cause notice to CIIM Services Pvt Ltd, Guwahati asking it as to why necessary action shall not be initiated against it for its insincere work in aadhar enrollment.

Talking to The Sentinel, GAD Commissioner-Secretary M Angamuthu said: “The progress of Aadhaar enrollment by some of the firms is very slow – beyond the limit. Per day Aadhaar enrollment of some of the centres under is less than 20. This has forced us to issue show-cause notice to one of the firms. More such firms are in line to get such notices.”

The GAD asked six firms to complete Aadhaar enrollment work within a year. However, given the current pace of enrollment in the State, the work seems to take more than a year.

Aadhaar enrollment work began in the State on October 6, 2018, after much delay. The State has been divided into ten zones for the implementation of Aadhaar under the supervision of the GAD. As many as 1,241 Aadhaar enrollment centres have been opened in the State. Each of the centres is manned by a State government document-verifying official. At the district levels, the deputy commissioners have been monitoring the progress of implementation.

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number that can be obtained by residents of India, based on their biometric and demographic data.
