AGP protests against citizenship amendment bill, demands arrest of Subodh

GOLAGHAT(Dhekial)/PATHSALA/GAON/JORHAT, March  16: The activists of Asom Ga Parishad (AGP) Golaghat district committee staged a sit-in near the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Golaghat on Thursday against the citizenship amendment bill, 2016 and demanded arrest of prime culprit of the Silapathar incident, Subodh Biswas.

Talking part in the protest, the activists of the party shouted various slogans against the BJP government. They slammed the BJP government for moving the citizenship amendment bill, 2016 to settle the illegal migrants. They also slammed the State Government for failing to arrest Subodh Biswas.

Talking to media persons, the general secretary of Golaghat district AGP, Ashikur Rahman said, “The rendra Modi-led BJP government wants to ruin Assamese culture, society and dignity of Assamese people by granting Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016.   The steps taken by the Modi government will paralyze the indigenous people of Assam socially, economically and educatiolly.”

The AGP Golaghat district committee demanded withdrawal of the decision of the BJP government regarding minority refugees immediately.

On the other hand, Bajali Zilla Samiti of AGP also resorted to three-hour sit-in at Pathsala- Hari Mandir premises of Barpeta district on Thursday demanding arrest of NIBBUSS leader Subodh Biswas for inciting violence in Silapathar in Dhemaji district and withdrawal of the citizenship amendment bill, 2016

MLA of Patacharkuchi constituency, Pabindra Deka and AGP workers along with members of many other organizations like AJYCP, AASU, Pathsala Bazaar Committee and Pathsala Chambers of Commerce participated in the protest at the Hari Mandir premises in front of the AASU office demanding immediate arrest of Subodh Biswas and withdrawal of the citizenship amendment bill, 2016.

The gaon district unit of Asom Ga Parishad (AGP) also staged a protest at gaon Swahid Bhavan premises on Thursday morning against the initiative of the government for amendment of citizenship bill and also asked for clear-cut justice in the Silapathar incident.

Protesters of the regiol political party submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal through the Deputy Commissioner of gaon in which the district unit asked for identification of the illegal foreigners and their deportation as per articles 6 and 7 of the Assam Accord. In the memorandum, the district unit further demanded that they opposed the government’s attempt to impose on Assam the additiol burden of the illegal Hindu Bangladeshi tiols who had come after March 25, 1971.  The AGP would never let this happen by any means, the memorandum stated.

 On the other hand, the unit further demanded immediate judicial action against the culprits of the Silapathar incident who dared to insult music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Jyotiprasad Agarwala and Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha.

AGP Jorhat district committee also staged protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Jorhat on Thursday in protest against the vandalism of the martyrs’ column and AASU office at Silapathar and to demand repeal of the citizenship amendment bill, 2016. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Jorhat.

“We condemn the Silapathar incident and the culprits should be arrested,” said Saurav Pran Bora, general secretary of AGP Jorhat district committee.
