Itanagar: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) has strongly condemned the threat, intimidation and physical assault meted out to innocent Arunachalees in Assam’s Dibrugarh town in the aftermath of a freak accident that occurred on Wednesday in the town. “It is a despicable act as no people were involved from our State. Just because the vehicle happened to have a Arunachal registration, some section of Assamese people damaged the vehicles of Arunachalees who generally come to Dibrugarh town, mainly for medical purpose,” AAPSU president Hawa Bagang and general secretary Tabom Dai said in a joint statement here.

A road accident reportedly took place between a motorbike and a vehicle bearing registration number of Arunachal at AMC Road of Paltan Bazaar at Dibrugarh on Wednesday night, wherein two people were killed, giving rise to mob fury. The police later arrested the main culprits, one Gunin Chetia of Laipuli, Tinsukia and another Sonu Ahmed of Dibrugarh.

“The miscreants have not even spared the Arunachal Charity Home where sick patients mainly from poor financial background from the State take refuge,” the AAPSU leaders said.

The union termed the incident as ‘unfortunate’ and ‘act’ of preconceived hatred for people of Arunachal.

The recent incident of loot and robbing, targeting people of Arunachal origin near Bogibeel Bridge is a glaring example, the AAPSU said.

The union called upon both the Assam and Arunachal Pradesh governments to take the matter seriously and give exemplary punishment to the people who were involved in such senseless violence.

The union also cautioned the people involved in such hate campaign to remember the age old historic relationship between the two neighbouring States. The AAPSU leadership on Thursday has called upon its AASU counterpart on the prevailing situation and apprised them in containing the violence against innocent Arunachalees in Assam.
