GUWAHATI, Aug 19: The academic session for higher secondary students in the State started on August 1. However, most of the students are without textbooks as Dispur has not been able to supply textbooks free of cost as promised.

Most of the students of Guwahati have not got free textbooks as promised by Dispur, barring a few of B Booroah College, Guwahati. The situation in far-flung areas in the State may be even worse.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has conducted a survey on its own to ascertain the number of HS students to have got free textbooks in Guwahati. AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that they had detected that many students are not getting free textbooks in Guwahati itself. They are worried that the students of rural areas in the State may be deprived of free textbooks.

The two student leaders warned Dispur not to neglect the supply of free textbooks to HS students so that the AASU need not have to take to the streets on textbooks.

They demanded Dispur of fulfilling its commitment of supplying textbooks free of cost to HS students without delay.
